Das neutrale England
A little ditty from Kladderadatsch - Ein Kriegsgedenkbuch 1870-1871, it pains me to say it but some things never change, the tone of this sounds awfully familiar at the moment.
Das neutrale England.

Motto: „Zwei Seelen wohnen, ach! in meiner Bruſt“ – John Bull.
„Ein Schrei des Abſcheu's geht durch die Nationen,
Wuth und Entrüſtung füllt das Inſelland—“
„Braucht ihr zufällig noch Patronen,
Ich liefre fie laut Preiscourant.“
„Rein ſchwärzeres Verbrechen ſah die Erde,
Ehrloſere Gewaltthat ſah fie nie—“
„Vorfrefflich eignen meine Pferde
Sich für die leichte Cavallerie.“
„Die Preſſe Englands grollt wie Meeresbrandung.
Und Parlament und Volk ruft laut zur That—“
„Sandſäcke für die Küſtenlandung
Sind auf Beſtellung ſtets parat.“
„Kurzum, verfallen ſind ſie unſrem Haſſe,
Verfallen ſind die Frevler Englands Fluch —“
„Entrüſtet aber rüſte ich per Casse
Und per comptant ihr Heer mit neuem Tuch.“
„So meine Wünſche, meine Friedensmühen
Gerecht vertheilend, bleibe ich neutral.“
„Deutſchland beziehe bill'ge Sympathien.
Und Frankreich theures Kriegesmaterial!“

“A cry of horror echoes through the nations,
Wrath and indignation fill the Isle—”
“Need bullets, by the way, for your aggressions?
I sell them – see my price list with a smile.”
“A blacker crime the earth has never known,
A baser act it never yet did see—”
“My horses, by the way, are widely shown
To suit light cavalry admirably.”
“The English press roars like the ocean tide,
And Parliament calls loudly now for deed—”
“Sandbags for amphibious landing, tried
And tested, are in stock for all your need.”
“In short, they’ve earned our hatred, full and just,
The scoundrels fall beneath Britannia’s curse—”
“Yet roused, I rise – and, paid in cash or trust,
Supply their troops with uniforms and worse.”
“Thus, balancing my wish for peace and fairness,
I stay completely neutral in this brawl.
Germany gets cheap and cordial awareness—
And France gets weapons, uniforms and all.”
